Many couples discover live wedding painting after their wedding, or decide they’d love a painting once they see their photographs. The good news is that a painting can still be made, from your photos, by commissioning an artist to paint it in their studio. It’s also a popular first anniversary gift.

How studio commissions usually work
- You share your photos and explain what you’d like painted.
- The artist plans the composition with you: the scene, colours, background and any details to include.
- The painting is made in the studio, typically over many hours, with updates or a preview depending on the artist.
- It’s varnished, packaged and delivered, sometimes with framing as an option.
Research the artist’s style first
Commissioned wedding paintings range from loose and expressive to highly detailed and realistic. Look through artists’ portfolios, especially paintings made from photos, and choose someone whose finished work you would love on your wall. Personal taste matters more than anything here.
Choosing the right photos
Clear, well-lit photos with faces in focus give the best results. Faces that are very small in the frame are harder to paint with a strong likeness. A good artist can combine photos, for example the two of you from one shot and the venue from another, or move you to a different setting. If you’re unsure, send a few options and ask which will paint best.
Live painting or studio commission?
They’re different experiences. A live painting is part of the wedding: guests watch it develop and it captures the atmosphere in the room. A studio commission gives the artist more time and control, so it suits couples who want a carefully composed, detailed piece, or who simply didn’t have a painter on the day. Both result in a one-off painting.

What affects the price
Many of the same factors apply as for live wedding painting costs:
- Canvas size
- Number of people painted
- Level of detail and studio hours
- Framing and delivery
For example, Katie Bowden Art offers an Intimate Portrait commission from £849 for two people on a 16×20″ canvas, and a Family Legacy commission from £1,650 for up to four people on an 18×24″ canvas.
How long does it take?
Detailed studio paintings take time, and many artists have waiting lists, particularly during wedding season. Delivery of several months is common. If you’re planning a painting as a gift for a specific date, tell the artist when you book.
Questions to ask before you commission
- Can I see finished commissions painted from photos?
- Is the painting entirely hand-painted, or is any part printed or traced?
- How many studio hours go into a piece?
- Will we agree the composition before you start?
- How many people can be included on each canvas size?
- How long will it take, and how is it delivered?
