Live Wedding Guest Illustrations: A Complete Guide

Live guest illustrations have become one of the most popular wedding favours in the UK. An illustrator paints your guests during the celebration, and each guest takes their portrait home on the night. Here’s how they work and what to think about when you’re planning.

What are live guest illustrations?

An artist (see live guest illustrations) sets up at your wedding and paints guests one at a time, or in couples and small groups, usually in watercolour or ink. Many illustrators work from a quick photo so guests don’t have to sit still for long. The finished illustrations are handed out during the day, so they double as favours and entertainment.

Find a style you love

Illustrators’ styles vary enormously: delicate line and wash, bold colour, minimalist silhouettes, or detailed portraits. Some work in watercolour, others in ink, gouache or digitally. Look through a few portfolios and notice which style suits your wedding and your guests. There’s no right answer, just the one you like best.

Faceless or with faces?

Most illustrators offer two styles. Faceless illustrations capture outfits, hair and pose without facial features. They’re faster, so more guests can be painted. Illustrations with faces include likenesses, which makes them more personal but takes longer per guest. Neither is better; it depends whether you’d prefer to reach more guests or have more detail.

How many guests can be painted?

This varies by artist, style and size. As a guide, a single illustrator might paint around 8 to 10 guests an hour for small faceless illustrations, and fewer for larger pieces or with faces. For bigger weddings, many illustrators can bring a second artist, which roughly doubles the number of guests painted in the same time.

When during the day works best?

The drinks reception is usually the best slot. Guests are mingling, there’s natural downtime while the couple are having photos taken, and illustrations are ready to take home by the end of the night. Some couples continue into the evening for larger guest lists.

What does it cost?

Illustrators usually price by the hour or per guest, with extra for faces, larger sizes or a second artist. Some packages also include a portrait of the couple. For the full picture on budgets, see how much a live wedding painter costs. When comparing quotes, check how many guests are realistically covered, not just the number of hours.

As one example, Katie Bowden Art’s hourly guest illustration packages start at £642 for four hours, including an A4 painting of the couple, and per-guest pricing starts from £15 per guest.

Individual illustrator or a team?

For smaller weddings, a single illustrator is often enough. For larger guest lists, or if you’d like live illustrations alongside a live canvas painting, an illustration team can be a better fit. In the Midlands, Cupid & Co is a team of live wedding artists who can cover larger guest lists and combine illustrations with live painting.

What if a guest misses out?

At busy weddings, not everyone gets painted. Some illustrators, including Katie Bowden Art, offer illustrations after the wedding from a photo, posted directly to the guest.

Ask how they work

It’s worth asking whether illustrations are painted by hand on the day, drawn digitally and printed, or a mix. All can look lovely, but they’re different products, and knowing which you’re booking avoids surprises.

Questions to ask an illustrator

These sit alongside the questions to ask a live wedding painter.

  • How many guests can you realistically paint in the time booked?
  • Faceless or with faces, and what size?
  • How much space do you need, and do you bring your own table and lighting?
  • Can you bring a second artist for a larger guest list?
  • Is a painting of the couple included?
