How Much Does a Live Wedding Painter Cost in the UK?

Live wedding painting has become a popular addition to UK weddings, but prices can be hard to find and even harder to compare. Two painters can quote very different figures for what sounds like the same thing. This guide explains what drives the cost, what a quote should include, and how to compare like with like.

Start with style, not price

Every live wedding painter works differently, and there’s no single “right” style. Some paint loose, impressionistic scenes full of movement and atmosphere. Others work in fine, realistic detail with recognisable faces. Some favour soft, muted colours; others love bold contrast. Acrylic, oil and watercolour all look different on the wall, too.

Before you compare prices, spend some time looking through painters’ portfolios and social media and notice which paintings you keep coming back to. The right painter for you is the one whose finished work you’d genuinely love to hang in your home, and that’s personal preference as much as anything else.

What affects the price

Time at your wedding

Most of the cost is the artist’s time. A painter who arrives before your ceremony and paints through to the evening (see what happens during a live wedding painting) is giving you a full working day, often longer once you include setting up, packing down and travel. Shorter bookings usually cost less but leave less time for detail.

Studio finishing

Some painters finish the canvas on the day. Others paint the key scene live and then spend further hours in their studio refining faces, fabric and light. Studio time adds to the price, but it’s often the difference, as how long a live wedding painting takes explains, between a lively impression of the day and a highly detailed heirloom.

Canvas size

Larger canvases take longer to paint and hold more people and detail. If you’d like a large statement piece for a big wall, expect to pay more than for a smaller canvas.

How many people are painted

Most packages include the couple. Adding parents, children or a bridal party usually costs extra per person, because each one needs time to get the likeness right. Canvas size also limits how many people fit comfortably.

Travel and accommodation

Many painters include travel within a set radius and charge mileage beyond it. If your venue is a long drive away, an overnight stay may be needed.

What should be included in a quote

  • The canvas and all materials
  • Hours of live painting on the day
  • Any studio finishing time, and how long delivery takes
  • How many people are included
  • Travel, and when extra mileage applies
  • Varnishing, packaging and delivery
  • Optional extras such as framing or a hanging kit

How to compare painters fairly

Our 13 questions to ask before you book will help here. Rather than comparing headline prices, compare what you get for them: canvas size, hours, how many people, and whether the painting is finished on the day or in the studio. Ask to see complete finished canvases rather than close-ups, and check delivery times for studio-finished pieces, which can be several months.

Ask how the painting is made

Techniques vary between artists, and it’s perfectly reasonable to ask about them. Is the painting started from a blank canvas on the day? Is any part of it printed, traced or projected? How much is painted live and how much in the studio? Most painters are happy to explain their process, and a clear answer means you know exactly what you’re paying for.

An example

To give a real-world reference, here is how one Birmingham-based painter prices their work. At Katie Bowden Art, live canvas packages range from £649 for a 16×20″ canvas finished on the day to £2,299 for a 32×40″ canvas with 20+ hours of studio finishing. Every package includes the couple, extra people are £200 each, and travel within 50 miles of Birmingham is included. Other painters will structure things differently, so use this as a reference point rather than a benchmark.

Is it worth it?

That depends on what you value, and it’s worth doing your research before you decide. Photographs and video record exactly how the day looked. A painting is an interpretation of it (more on that in live painting vs photography), and many couples value having a one-off piece of art on the wall. It’s also part of the day itself: guests can watch it develop, which gives them something to gather around between the ceremony and the speeches.
